Zircon U-Pb geochronology and petrogenesis of Middle Eocene monzonitic plutons in NE Turkey: constraints for generation of post-collisional I-type shoshonitic magmas

ABSTRACT We present U – Pb zircon geochronology and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of monzonitic plutons from NE Turkey to elucidate their genesis and provide significant insights into the generation of post-collisional I-type shoshonitic magmas. Zircon U – Pb dating of the monzonitic plutons yielded an emplacement of the Middle Eocene (44–39 Ma). Geochemically, the monzonitic plutons are I-type, metaluminous, and shoshonitic in composition, and have high contents of total alkalis and LILE, high ratios of LREE/HREE and LREE/HFSE, and show negative Nb-Ta-Ti and Eu (EuN/Eu* = 0.69–0.84) anomalies. The monzonitic plutons have homogeneous and moderately low initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.70464–0.70495), positive εNd(t) values (0.33 to 1.28), and narrow variation of the initial Pb isotope contents with 206Pb/204Pb (18.74–18.82), 207Pb/204Pb (15.64–15.65), and 207Pb/204Pb (38.81–38.90). The combined use of whole-rock trace elements and isotopic compositions with regional geology suggests that parental magmas of the monzonitic plutons were generated from mainly melt-metasomatized sub-continental lithospheric mantle source and lesser crustal components in an extensional orogenic setting, and then monzonitic magmas have evolved by dominantly fractional crystallization in crustal levels.

Middle-Late Miocene to Pleistocene Post-Collisional Magmatism in the Arabia-Eurasia Collision Zone, an Example from Northwest Iran

Abstract Post-collisional volcanism contains important clues for understanding the processes that prevail in orogenic belts, including those in the mantle and the uplift and collapse of continents. Here we report new geochronological and geochemical data for a suite of post-collisional Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic rocks from northwest Iran. Four groups of volcanic rocks can be distinguished according to their geochemical and isotopic signatures, including: (1) Miocene depleted lavas with high Nd and Hf but low Pb and Sr isotopic ratios, (2) less depleted lavas with quite variable Pb isotopic composition, (3) lavas with non-radiogenic Nd and Hf isotopic values, but highly radiogenic Sr and Pb isotopic composition, and (4) Pleistocene adakitic rocks with depleted isotopic signatures. The isotopic data reveal that the Miocene rocks are derived from asthenospheric and highly heterogeneous sub-continental lithospheric mantle sources. Evidence suggests that the lithospheric mantle contains recycled upper continental material and is isotopically similar to the enriched mantle two (EMII) end-member. Analysis of Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf-O isotopes in both mineral and rock groundmass, in conjunction with energy-constrained assimilation and fractional crystallization (EC-AFC) numerical modeling, demonstrates that the incorporation of continental crust during magma fractionation via AFC had an insignificant impact on the isotopic composition of the Miocene lavas. Moreover, adakites are the youngest rocks and show a geochemical signature consistent with the partial melting of a young and mafic continental lower crust. Both seismological data and geochemical signatures on these Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic rocks indicate the initiation of asthenospheric upwelling and orogen uplift in the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, which occurred after slab break-off, following the Neotethyan closure.

Post-collisional ultrapotassic volcanic rocks and ultramafic xenoliths in the Eslamieh Peninsula, NW Iran: Petrological and geochemical constraints on mantle source and metasomatism

The Eslamieh Peninsula in NW Iran exposes Miocene potassic to ultrapotassic volcanic rocks that are often associated with a variety of ultramafic xenoliths. Based on geochemical features, the rocks investigated in this study can be subdivided into two main groups: 1) MgO-rich (8.0–13.9 wt%) basic (SiO2 = 46.1–50.9 wt%) rocks, which comprise mafic lamprophyres and pyroxenite xenoliths, and 2) MgO-poor (1.5–6.4 wt%) basic to intermediate (SiO2 = 48.2–61.2 wt%) rocks, mainly consisting of trachytes, felsic lamprophyres, and analcime-bearing tephriphonolites and phonotephrites. Rocks in both groups have variable but generally low Ni (10–115 ppm; mostly <60 ppm) and Cr (6–628 ppm; mostly <200 ppm), and display enrichment in LREE over HREE (e.g., La/Yb = 17–55), with a large overlap between the MgO-rich and MgO-poor types. These features are coupled with enriched LILE/HFSE ratios (e.g., Ba/Nb mostly 16–116), negative Nb-Ta-Ti anomalies and positive Pb peaks in primitive mantle-normalised diagrams (e.g., Nb/Nb* mostly <0.7). Both high-and poor-MgO samples have strongly radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios (0.7078–0.7086), (143Nd/144Nd)i below the Chondritic Uniform Reservoir (CHUR) = 0.51235–0.51244, and ɛHfi ranging from −3.1 to −11.1‰, suggesting involvement of a lower continental crust component in their genesis. The major oxide and trace element contents the high-MgO and high-CaO rocks indicate derivation from a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, variably metasomatised by fluids and melts released by a subducted slab in a mantle wedge. Primitive melts evolved via mafic mineral fractionation and possible assimilation of lower crust, generating the SiO2 higher and CaO-MgO-poorer group. We suggest that small degree partial melting of the enriched mantle sources could have been triggered by Neo-Tethys slab roll-back during the Arabian-Iranian collision.

Zircon U–Pb geochronology, Nd isotopes and geochemistry of mafic granulites from the Central Indian Tectonic Zone: isotopic constraints on Proterozoic crustal evolution

Abstract The Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ) comprises northern and southern Indian cratonic blocks and is a tectonic window that is suitable for investigating the Proterozoic crustal evolution because of the presence of a wide variety of lithologies. Geochemical and geochronological data on mafic granulites by previous workers do not ascertain the possibility of mafic protoliths and their coeval link to other CITZ units. Thus, determining the precise timing of the formation of mafic granulites may indicate a connection between metamorphism and fragmentation of the Columbian supercontinent. This study presents zircon U–Pb ages, Nd isotopes and the geochemistry of mafic granulites to evaluate their genesis and timing of metamorphism. The results show the tholeiitic affinity and primary magmatic differentiation of the parental melt. Depletion of Nb, P, Zr and Ti and positive enrichment of Ba, U and Pb indicate the derivation of mafic granulites from a variably enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source. The zircon U–Pb ages (1564 ± 8 to 1598 ± 9 Ma) are interpreted as a period of granulite-facies metamorphism. The T DM (depleted-mantle) model ages (2.9–3.4 Ga) of mafic granulites indicate the timing of mafic protolith extraction. The mineral isochron age c. 1.0 Ga indicates that these rocks underwent some events during an early Neoproterozoic period. Protolith of mafic granulites could be related to the evolution of melts derived from metasomatized SCLM through fractional crystallization processes.

Petrogenesis of the Hoy lava field, a long-lived continental mafic volcanic province in eastern Australia

Small-scale continental basaltic fields can erupt with little warning and bring deep undegassed magmas to the surface rapidly. To explore the lifetime, petrogenesis and plumbing system architecture feeding such basaltic lava fields and compare them with large-scale shield volcanoes, we have focused on the Hoy lava field, central Queensland, Australia. 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, elemental and isotopic whole-rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry on selected Hoy samples reveal long-lived volcanism of ca 50 Ma and magma storage at mantle depths, notably different from the comparatively short duration (3–5 Myr) and crustal magma storage depths of shield volcanoes. In this study, four Hoy lava-field eruptive intervals spanning ca 50 Ma were investigated: 67.5 ± 0.3 Ma, 32.3 ± 0.6–31.6 ± 0.7 Ma, 21.9 ± 0.5 Ma and 18.1 ± 0.3 Ma. In all four eruptive events, samples are porphyritic alkali basalts and trachybasalts (11.41–6.45 wt% MgO) with incompatible element concentrations and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope ratios dominantly derived from a metasomatised sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source with an enriched mantle I (EMI) signature. Complex crystal populations show major- and trace-element variations reflecting fractional crystallisation, magma recharge, magma mixing and mantle xenocryst entrainment. Clinopyroxene–melt thermobarometry indicates magma storage in SCLM reservoirs at ∼30–47 km depths. The nearby larger but shorter-lived (3–5 Myr) Buckland central volcano has similar source compositions; however, magma storage is limited and concentrated in the crust, resulting in increased crustal contamination. The results suggest that basaltic centres of contrasting scale and longevity are linked to distinct magma production mechanisms, fluxes, ascent and differentiation.

Geochronology, geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–C–O isotopic composition of the Qieganbulake carbonatites at the northeastern margin of the Tarim Craton, northwest China

Carbonatites are the predominant source of rare earth element (REE) resources globally, but their origins and petrogenesis remain unclear. Currently, >600 carbonatites have been found worldwide, but only a few (<14%) of these carbonatites contain REE deposits. Some carbonatites are rich in REEs but do not host high-grade REE deposits. The Qieganbulake carbonatites at the northeastern margin of the Tarim Craton, China, are ideal for investigating why some carbonatites do not host REE mineralization. We undertook a detailed petrographic, geochronological, and isotopic study of the Qieganbulake carbonatites. In previous studies, a carbonatite at Qieganbulake was dated to ca. 811 Ma. However, in this study, ages of ca. 926 Ma were obtained for phlogopite and baddeleyite in carbonatite dykes rather than pyroxenites or phlogopitelites-bearing carbonatite complex. Such ages of ca. 926 Ma are consistent with a previously published apatite U–Pb age. 40Ar/39Ar dating of phlogopite yielded a plateau age of 928 ± 17 Ma and secondary ion mass spectrometry U–Pb dating of baddeleyite yielded a concordia age of 926 ± 8 Ma, implying the carbonatite was emplaced at ca. 926 Ma. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U–Pb dating of monazite yielded a 206Pb/238U intercept age of 811 ± 27 Ma, indicating that the main REE mineralization stage was coeval with later carbonatite emplacement at ca. 811 Ma. The studied Qieganbulake calcio-carbonatite samples are REE-rich (864–1495 ppm) and consist of calcite (62.18–93.92 vol%), apatite (1.10–24.82 vol%), dolomite (0.37–10.48 vol%), and lesser amounts of phlogopite, olivine, monazite, magnetite, and vermiculite. The calcite, apatite, and monazite (<1 vol%) have REE contents of 757–1111 ppm, 5127–11,556 ppm, and 45.35–59.88 wt%, respectively, and account for the high REE contents of the carbonatites (883–1539 ppm). The small amount of monazite in this carbonatite suggests it is a prospective rather than a confirmed ore deposit. Petrographic studies, oxygen values of 5.74 and 7.51 ‰ and characteristics of trace element for apatites with less monazite around suggest they have magmatic origin with less alteration. The 926 Ma Qieganbulake carbonatite has high Sr isotope ratios (0.70580–0.70639) and negative εNd(t) values (−7.6 to −11.8), indicative of an enriched mantle source. δ13CPDB and δ18OVSMOW values of the carbonatites vary from –3.3‰ to –4.1‰ and 9.7‰ to 12.0‰, respectively, indicative of a contribution from recycled crustal C that was probably derived from a subducted oceanic slab. Above characteristics of carbonatite with ∼926 Ma are different with those of carbonatite occurred at ∼811 Ma, suggesting two carbonatite emplacements in Qieganbulake. Based on our results and the regional geology, we infer that the 926 Ma Qieganbulake carbonatite was derived by partial melting of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source that had been metasomatized by early Neoproterozoic subduction during circum-Rodinia subduction in the northern Tarim Craton. Early crystallization of apatite sequestered the REEs, resulting in limited REE mineralization. In addition, the limited hydrothermal alteration and ligands available, such as F− and SO42−, hindered REE transportation and precipitation.

Integrated U-Pb and Hf zircon and whole-rock Nd isotopes studies of Devonian granitic rocks from Sierra de San Luis (Sierras Pampeanas, Argentina): Petrogenetic implications

Previous geochronological data indicate a protracted Devonian magmatic activity developed in the Sierra de San Luis, Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina, with three major crystallization events: 393±3, 384±2, and 377±2 Ma. Previously reported whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopes data define two average distinctive εNdt values: -1.37 and -3.47, and they are consistent with new data presented here. The first signature is assumed for a parental magma with dominant metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source, whereas the second signature could represent a parental magma derived of a lower continental crust source hybridized with magmas of the first signature. Notably, the new zircon Hf isotopes performed on the same zircon domains that were previously dated, indicate that the contribution of the source was variable over time. In situ Hf in zircon is relevant to evaluate the compositional evolution of the Devonian granitic magmas in the Sierra de San Luis, since the high variability of the εHft values recorded in zircons indicate that the calculated εNdt values for the samples can only be interpreted as a final picture of the petrogenetic process. Zircon Hf isotopes data suggest that the zircon crystallized from a magma with variable composition, recording two major events, yielding two εHft signatures: (1) -3.54 and (2) -6.85. A third composition, yield a less representative εHft value of -5.44, and represent a εHft signature (3).

Precise Pb-Pb baddeleyite ages and petrogenesis of the NW-SE trending Paleoproterozoic mafic dyke swarm from the Bundelkhand craton, India: Implications to the enriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle

Based on a similar structural trend, the NW-SE trending mafic dykes from the Bundelkhand craton were assigned an emplacement age of 1979 ± 8 Ma. Many geochemistry and paleomagnetic studies on these dykes have proposed the presence of more than one mafic dyke event within the NW-SE trending mafic dyke swarm. Still, until now, this suggestion was not supported by precise geochronology. This study presents TE-TIMS Pb-Pb baddeleyite ages of 2001.5±1.3 Ma, 2005.0±0.8 Ma, and 2004.5±0.7 Ma from the NW-SE trending dykes of Ajaygarh dyke swarm located towards the southeast margin of the Bundelkhand craton. The mean age of 2004.3±3.5 Ma is inferred as the emplacement age of these dykes. This dyke event is hitherto unknown and the oldest in the Bundelkhand craton. Further, we present the major and trace element geochemistry data on 34 samples from NW-SE trending dykes. These results suggest the presence of three geochemically distinct groups of dykes from NW-SE trending dykes. Further, the geochemical modeling of studied dykes suggests their derivation from subcontinental lithospheric mantle sources enriched by subduction-derived fluids at different depths and times. These dykes were emplaced as part of a sporadically spread global crustal extension event.

Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.26 Ga) Srednecheremshansk mafic–ultramafic intrusion in the southern Siberia: Signature of the Mackenzie event in Siberia

Several published Mesoproterozoic paleogeographic reconstructions suggest proximity of northern Laurentia and southern Siberia. However, the apparent absence of the traces of the ca. 1.27 Ga giant Mackenzie magmatic event in southern Siberia was somewhat contradictory to this hypothesis. Here we present geochronological, mineralogical, geochemical, Nd isotopic, and paleomagnetic data from the Srednecheremshansk dyke-shaped intrusion, which was recently found in the Sharyzhalgay uplift of the southern part of the Siberian craton and which can be related to the Mackenzie event. The plagioclase-bearing peridotite of this intrusion yielded U-Pb (ID-TIMS) baddeleyite concordia age of 1260 ± 3 Ma, which is interpreted as the time of their emplacement. This age is close to the previously published baddeleyite age of gabbro from the same intrusion (1258 ± 5 Ma). The Srednecheremshansk intrusion is composed of ultramafic and mafic rocks. The main rock-forming minerals of the intrusion are olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, phlogopite, and plagioclase in various proportions. Sulfide mineralization of the intrusion is represented by pentlandite nodules. The chemical composition of Srednecheremshansk ultramafic and mafic rocks correspond to subalkaline peridotite gabbro and gabbro. These rocks are characterized by negative ɛNd(t) values range from −6.3 to −6.9. Ultramafic and mafic rocks have similar geochemical and isotopic characteristics, indicating their generation from a single subcontinental lithospheric mantle source. The chemical composition of the Srednecheremshansk intrusion is similar to those of the ca. 1.27 Ga Muskox mafic–ultramafic intrusion of the Mackenzie Large Igneous Province in northern Laurentia. Paleomagnetic data permit a variety of possible Laurentia-Siberia reconstructions in Mesoproterozoic. The combination of geochronological, geochemical, and paleomagnetic data allows the relation of the Srednecheremshansk intrusion with the Mackenzie magmatic event.

Neoproterozoic Aksu Diabase Dyke, Chinese South Tianshan: Magma Sources and Implications for Regional Gold Metallogeny

Tianshan is one of the world’s largest gold provinces; however, the relationship between gold mineralization and metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) remains poorly understood. To improve our understanding, we present new bulk-rock geochemistry and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations of the SCLM-sourced Aksu Neoproterozoic diabase dykes in Chinese South Tianshan. These data, combined with in situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of hydrothermal pyrite grains in the diabase dykes, are used to discuss the SCLM source characteristics in the region and their potential links to formation of gold deposits. The diabase dykes exhibit high Th/Yb (0.47–0.62) and low Nb/U (13.4–16.3) ratios, indicating that magma evolution involves subduction-related fluid metasomatism and limited contamination of the continental crust. This is consistent with little variation in whole-rock Pd/Zr, Cu/Zr, and Ni/MgO ratios, suggesting that no sulfide segregation was caused by crustal contamination and magma mixing. In addition, the diabase dykes show low PGE and Au contents, with high Cu/Pd (&gt;105) and low Cu/Zr (&lt;0.5) ratios, indicating that magmas were derived from low-degree partial melting of the SCLM under S-saturated conditions. Such source characteristics indicate residual sulfides and chalcophile elements (e.g., PGEs, Au, and Cu) were concentrated at the SCLM reservoir in South Tianshan. Hydrothermal pyrite in the studied dykes has similar Au/Ag ratios and trace element distribution patterns to gold-bearing pyrite of lode gold deposits in Chinese South Tianshan, indicating that metasomatized SCLM may have contributed ore metals during the formation of these gold deposits. Adding to the available data, our study highlights that the SCLM may be a potential metal source reservoir, and it may have contributed to formation of the lode gold deposits in Chinese South Tianshan.

Geochronology and geochemistry of the Panjal Traps from the southern Pir Panjal Range, Kashmir, India

The eruption of the Panjal Traps is associated with rifting along the Tethyan margin of Gondwana. A CA-ID-TIMS zircon U-Pb age of basalt collected from the southern Pir Panjal Range (SPPR) yielded a weighted-mean 206Pb/238U age of 288.2 ± 0.3 Ma. The rocks from the SPPR can be divided into three compositionally distinct groups (basalt: SiO2 < 52 wt%; Mg# = 56–36, basaltic andesite: SiO2 = 52–60 wt%; Mg# = 32–48, and silicic: SiO2 > 64.0 wt%; Mg# = 27–23) and are chemically correlated with rocks from the eastern Kashmir Valley rather than the northern Pir Panjal Range (NPPR). The Sr-Nd isotopes (87Sr/86Sri = 0.70860–0.71104; εNd(t) = −6.1 to −4.4) of the mafic rocks are similar and indicate that their magmas were derived from a subduction modified subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source. The silicic rocks were derived by partial melting of the continental crust (87Sr/86Sri = 0.71022–0.71093; εNd(t) = −8.7 to −7.2) and their discovery in the SPPR indicates that silicic volcanism was far more extensive than previously thought. The 187Os/188Osi isotopic ratios of basalts from different regions of the Panjal Traps range from 0.1230 to 0.2832. Two samples from the NPPR have ratios of 0.1230 and 0.1256 that are slightly higher than primitive upper mantle at the time of eruption whereas the remaining samples show enriched values (0.1343–0.2832). The new data suggest that it is likely that the mantle source of the Panjal Traps transitioned from a SCLM source to a sublithospheric source over time as seafloor spreading developed.

Temporal, geochemical and isotopic constraints on plume-driven felsic and mafic components in a Mesoproterozoic flood rhyolite province

Formation of the Gawler felsic large igneous province (LIP) involved a mantle plume and mafic underplating underneath a metasomatised subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). Minor extrusive basalt to andesite rocks show the evolution of mantle composition during the initial stages of LIP formation (ca. 15931590 Ma). The earliest basaltic magmatism has low Nb/Yb ratios, low (La/Yb)N, and high εNd(i), representing a relatively depleted region from within the metasomatised SCLM. The more depleted composition and higher volume of this magmatism is consistent with early plume-head driven melts. Subsequent basaltic magmatism shows increasing enrichment in the source, evidenced by increasing Nb/Yb and Th/Nb ratios and decreasing εNd(i). The final stage of basaltic magmatism is marked by an isotopically juvenile SCLM source characterised by lower Th/Nb ratios, possibly representing a rejuvenation phase.Dacite to rhyolite rocks record the behaviour of crustal melting above a mantle plume. Older dacite to rhyolite units extruded 1593.611588.47 Ma represent compositionally heterogeneous rocks that correlate temporally with the basaltic to andesitic units. The Nd isotopic record suggests an increasing SCLM component from the early to late stages of felsic magmatism, occurring synchronously with increasing enrichment in basaltic magmas. Younger dacite to rhyolite units (1586.661586.39 Ma) have no associated mafic component, are geochemically and isotopically homogeneous and represent large volumes of felsic lava extruded in 300 Kyr. The final stage of felsic magmatism (1586.39 Ma) is marked by crystal-rich dacite, decreasing εNd(i) and lower Ti-in-zircon temperatures which are interpreted to represent the waning phase of the mantle plume and increasing crustal melting.This study provides a rare example of temporally constrained geochemical and isotopic compositions in mafic and felsic volcanism in a LIP. Our detailed petrogenetic work best demonstrates the generation of the Gawler LIP occurred in an intracontinental, plume setting analogous to a mafic LIP model.

Osmium isotopes fingerprint mantle controls on the genesis of an epithermal gold province

Abstract The formation of crustal blocks enriched with gold (Au) deposits above subduction zones is intimately bound to the genesis and evolution of magmatic-hydrothermal systems. A long-standing question, however, is whether the metal fertility of these systems stems from distinct sources that are anomalously enriched in Au or from subsequent processes occurring during crustal magma emplacement and hydrothermal activity. The Deseado Massif auriferous province in southern Patagonia (Argentina) is a unique place to test these contrasting hypotheses because Au-bearing mantle xenoliths indicate the presence of an underlying Au-rich lithospheric mantle reservoir. However, direct geochemical links between the Au-rich mantle source and the formation of the Deseado Massif auriferous province in the overlying crust remain to be established. To address this prominent gap in knowledge, we used sulfide Re-Os geochronology to identify the source of Au at Cerro Vanguardia, the largest low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Deseado Massif. Pyrite from high-grade Au quartz veins yielded an isochron age of 147.4 ± 2.9 Ma (mean square of weighted deviates = 1.04, n = 8) and an initial 187Os/188Os ratio of 0.26 ± 0.01, fingerprinting a dominant mantle control for the source of Os and, by inference, the source of Au. Our data provide a unique geochemical linkage between an Au-rich subcontinental lithospheric mantle source and the genesis of epithermal Au deposits, supporting the hypothesis that pre-enriched mantle domains may be a critical factor underpinning the global-scale localization of Au provinces.

Geodynamic and Isotopic Constraints on the Genesis of Kimberlites, Lamproites and Related Magmas From the Finnish Segment of the Karelian Craton

AbstractDespite the scientific and economic significance of kimberlites and related magmas, their origin is unclear. Here, we address this issue using whole‐rock and perovskite‐derived Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopes for the three occurrences of kimberlite, lamproites and ultramafic lamprophyres (UMLs) in Finland. Mesoproterozoic olivine lamproites at Lentiira‐Kuhmo and UMLs at Kuusamo have different isotopic signatures yet were emplaced contemporaneously at 1,200 Ma in response to an extensional regime linked to the Baltica‐Laurentia breakup. The low εNd(i) and εHf(i) values of the olivine lamproites are consistent with an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source while UML compositions are intermediate between those of typical kimberlites and lamproites and are interpreted to reflect mixing of asthenospheric melts and ∼10%–15% of melts sourced from metasomatized SCLM. The ∼750 Ma Kuusamo kimberlites, are probably linked to the mantle plume activity that initiated Rodinia's break‐up, exhibiting homogenous isotopic compositions which mirror the prominent Geodynamic and Source Constraints for ∼1,200 Ma Olivine Lamproite and Ultramafic Lamprophyre Magmatism in Eastern Finland (PREMA)‐like signature of kimberlites globally. By contrast, ∼620–585 Ma Kaavi‐Kuopio kimberlites show limited range in εNd(i) and 87Sr/86Sr(i) but have remarkably heterogeneous εHf(i) (+6.5 to −6.3) with a temporal trend toward lower εHf(i) values. While the Kuusamo kimberlites erupted during the early stage of continental break‐up, the Kaavi‐Kuopio kimberlites were emplaced when Rodinia break‐up was completed, coeval with formation of the Central Iapetus large igneous province. Magmas forming the Kaavi‐Kupio kimberlites may have formed from an upwelling mantle source similar to PREMA modified by increasing incorporation (up to 10%) of recycled crustal material through time accounting for the trend toward lower εHf(i) in these kimberlites.

Late Carboniferous extension-related magmatism in the southwestern Alxa block of NW China: geochronology, geochemistry, and tectonic implications

ABSTRACT Whether the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) was a continental arc or in a lithospheric extensional setting during the Carboniferous is the primary divergence among different tectonic models about the terminal evolutionary history of the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The Alxa block is the western segment of the northern NCC and contiguous to the southeastern CAOB, and therefore the tectonic setting of the Carboniferous magmatic intrusions in this block can shed light on this controversy. In this contribution, new zircon U–Pb ages, elemental geochemistry, and Sr-Nd isotopes are presented for thirteen Late Carboniferous (~318–300 Ma) magmatic intrusions in the southwestern Alxa block. Among them, seven calc-alkaline I-type granites and one aluminous A2-type granite were probably generated by the partial melting and crystallization differentiation of various crustal sources (perhaps including earlier orogenic materials) under different temperature conditions. Four quartz diorites and one hornblende gabbro may be the partial melts of subduction-modified basaltic lower crust sources and sub-continental lithospheric mantle sources, respectively. According to the integration of the new results and regional geological correlations, the Alxa block and the southeastern CAOB were most likely in a uniform tectonic regime during the Carboniferous. At that time, this region was characterized by the lithospheric extension-related magmatic rock associations, the increasing mantle inputs over time, the clockwise P–T paths of high temperature-low pressure metamorphic rocks, and the transgression sedimentary sequences. All these lines of evidence suggest an intra-continental lithospheric extensional setting rather than a continental arc setting for the southeastern CAOB during the Carboniferous.

Petrology of the Paleogene shoshonitic volcanism in north Sarab area, NW Iran: Geochemical, Ar-Ar dating and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic constraints

This study reports the earliest presumably known collisional magmatism of the NW Iran–eastern Turkey–Caucasus region from the north of Sarab city in East Azarbaijan province, NW Iran. Volcanic rocks of the area comprise alternating lava flows of mainly alkalibasalt, andesite, trachyandesite, dacite and pyroclastics (tuff and ignimbrite) affiliated with high-K calk-alkaline to shoshonitic magmatic series. Ar–Ar geochronology of the glass, matrix and plagioclase laths revealed crystallization time restricted to Late Eocene to Early Oligocene (34.90–30.69 Ma) which is coincident with the onset of the Arabian-Eurasian continental collision. Geochemical data show LREE enrichment compared with HREE and Nb and Ti depletion, indicating that they are subduction related. The Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data reflect the incorporation of oceanic sediment into the magma source. We suggest that the volcanic rocks were generated from a metasomatised subcontinental lithospheric mantle source through 5 to 10 vol% partial melting in an extensional back arc basin by the Neotethys slab roll-back under the Iranian plateau.

Iron isotope compositions of subduction-derived rocks: Insights from eclogites and metasediments of the Münchberg Massif (Germany)

The Fe isotope systematics of subducted lithologies are crucial for the understanding of redox-dependent mass transfer in subducting slabs, with consequences for the compositions of arc magmas and of the deep mantle. We investigated eclogites, metagabbros, and paragneisses from the Variscan Münchberg Massif to unravel whether their Fe isotope compositions are dominated by the igneous/sedimentary protolith signature, by low-temperature seawater alteration, or by later fluid-rock interactions during the subduction-exhumation cycle. Although the eclogites are thought to be derived from a continental rather than oceanic setting (possibly a rift-drift transition stage), they have mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like major and trace element compositions. They are often moderately oxidized compared to MORB (Fe3+/ΣFe = 0.06 to 0.30). Their δ56Fe values (+0.00 to +0.17‰; mean + 0.08 ± 0.01‰) mostly resemble those of MORB (+0.07 to +0.17‰). The metagabbros, which are derived from a more enriched mantle source than the eclogites, yielded heavier δ56Fe values (+0.09 to +0.22‰) similar to ocean island basalts, whereas those of the paragneisses (+0.03 to +0.10‰) are typical for pelitic sediments.It appears that the Fe isotope compositions of the igneous protoliths are largely preserved and little if any Fe was mobilized during the diverse fluid-rock interaction stages. The parental magma of the eclogites was probably somewhat isotopically lighter than similarly differentiated MORB magmas, perhaps due to the presence of metasomatized, isotopically light peridotites in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source. Although it is possible that δ56Fe values were slightly modified during seawater alteration and/or metamorphic fluid-rock interactions in some of the eclogites, the impact of fluid-rock interactions on the major element compositions of the eclogites appears to be small. Furthermore, the scarcity of metamorphic veins in the Münchberg Massif argues against significant Fe mobilization in the slab. We suggest that continental eclogites tend to retain their magmatic δ56Fe values throughout the subduction-exhumation cycle, whereas δ56Fe values of oceanic eclogites may often be dominated by seafloor alteration with potential local modifications in the slab close to fluid channels. The remarkable robustness of the Fe isotope compositions of continental eclogites suggests that they may be used to reconstruct protolith mantle source properties despite the complex post-magmatic history.

1.79–1.75 Ga mafic magmatism of the Siberian craton and late Paleoproterozoic paleogeography

The paper presents new geological, geochronological, geochemical, and Nd isotopic data on the late Paleoproterozoic dolerites of the Siberian craton. U-Pb baddeleyite ages of the Doros dolerites (Aldan shield, south-eastern Siberia) and East Anabar dolerites (Anabar shield, northern Siberia) are 1757 ± 4 and 1774 ± 6 Ma, respectively. This new geochronological data together with published 1.76–1.75 Ga ages for Timpton-Algamay dolerites of the Aldan shield and Chaya dolerites of the Baikal uplift (southern Siberia) revealed a 20 my difference between this magmatism in the north and south Siberia. The Doros dolerites in their chemical compositions correspond to sub-alkaline basaltic andesites, but the East Anabar dolerite is chemically close to basaltic trachyandesite. The Doros dolerites demonstrate negative and close to zero ɛNd(t) values (from −7.0 to +0.1), which correlate well with SiO2 and Mg#. All Doros dolerites have Nb–Ta and Ti anomalies in multielement spectra. The geochemical and Nd isotopic data suggest that the Doros dolerites have been formed by the mixing of mantle and crustal material. The East Anabar dolerites are characterized by a negative ɛNd(t) value of −3.7, negative Nb–Ta anomaly in multielement spectra, high concentrations of TiO2 and P2O5. The 1775 Ma East Anabar dolerites could be generated from a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, possibly with some mantle plume interaction (possibly centred at the convergence with the 1.76–1.75 Ga fanning Aldan swarm). Geochemistry and Nd isotope systematics of all 1.78–1.75 Ga mafic dykes and intrusions of the Siberian craton indicate the subcontinental lithospheric mantle source or mantle source contaminated by crustal material. Geochronological data from the 1.79–1.75 Ga magmatic rocks of Siberia and other continents suggest continuous magmatism over this interval in some continents, but a series of short magmatic events/pulses (from one to four) separated by intervals of quiescence in other continents. We locate the analysed dykes and sills on new 1750 Ma and 1790 Ma global paleogeographic reconstructions. Analysis of 1.79–1.75 Ga geochemical data on mafic intrusions from Late Paleoproterozoic continents suggests the prevalence of subcontinental lithospheric mantle source for the mafic intrusions over the pure mantle plume source.

The enriched Variscan lithosphere of NE Iberia: data from postcollisional Permian calc-alkaline lamprophyre dykes of Les Guilleries

Post-collisional mafic dykes crosscut the Paleozoic metamorphic basement and late-Variscan plutons in Les Guilleries massif (Catalan Coastal Ranges, NE Iberia). The predominance of mafic phenocrysts, porphyritic texture, abundant amphibole, high MgO and volatile content, together with crustal-like trace-element patterns indicate that the dykes correspond to calc-alkaline lamprophyres, mainly spessartites. Their enrichment in LILE, HFSE and REE and initial Sr-Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sri between 0.70851 and 0.71127, epsilon Ndi between -5.23 and -4.63) are consistent with an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle source. U-Pb ages of matrix titanite crystals yield concordia ages of 262±7Ma, congruent with crosscutting relationships. Postmagmatic processes are evidenced by intense chloritization and albitization of the lamprophyres, together with systematic variations of Na2O vs SiO2, K2O, CaO, Ba, Rb, Cs, Pb, Sr, Tl, and Zn, and possibly the removal of F. The geochemical and geochronological data support an orogenic geochemical affinity, in accordance with the transitional tectonic regime between Variscan compression/transpression and post-collisional transtension/extension, related to the fragmentation of Pangea and thinning of the lithosphere. The lamprophyre dykes studied could represent the youngest pulse of Variscan orogenic magmatism and, therefore, mark its end in NE Iberia before the onset of the generalized Triassic extension.

New geochronological and geochemical constraints on petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the Loe-Shilman carbonatite complex, Northwest Pakistan

The Loe-Shilman carbonatite complex in northwest Pakistan comprises carbonatite and ultrapotassic silicate rocks. The age and environment of emplacement of these rocks have long been controversial, and therefore, impeded our understanding on the regional tectonic setting. New whole-rock geochemistry, Sr-Nd isotopic and zircon petrochronological data provide age and petrogenetic information on the carbonatite and ultrapotassic silicate rocks of the Loe-Shilman complex. Zircon U/Pb data yield 206Pb/238U weighted mean ages of 90.6 ± 1.0 Ma (n = 33) for the carbonatite and 89.3 ± 1.0 Ma (n = 30) for the ultrapotassic rocks, which indicates that the two lithologies were emplaced simultaneously during a single tectonic/thermal event. The Nd isotope data of the ultrapotassic rocks is homogenous (εNd(i) = −2.5 to −2.9) and overlap εNd(i) of the carbonatite (−2.6 to −2.8), indicating derivation from a common, enriched mantle source. Despite this temporal overlap, whole-rock geochemical data, however, indicates that generation of both rock types by fractional crystallization or liquid immiscibility is unlikely and that the carbonatite and ultrapotassic rocks are actually products of two independent melts generated by partial melting of an enriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) source at the same time. Trace element data further indicate that the ultrapotassic rocks are products of fractional crystallization of a melt produced by a low degree partial melting of an enriched mantle source, within the garnet stability field. Moreover, the ultrapotassic rocks and carbonatites show association with anorogenic and within-plate plume type tectonic settings, coeval with juxtaposition of the northwestern margin of the Indian plate over the Réunion hotspot mantle-plume during Late Cretaceous time.
